2nd chapter

OUTSIDE: Self initiated Projects

Today, in the context of market driven society, architectural practice is commonly perceived as a service, rather than a practice of conceiving space and relations. For this matter, as an act of rebellion, architecture seeks for new, different ways of practicing the issues of content regarding space and society.

Within contemporary conditions, initiating an architectural project without any predefined assignment whatsoever implies thinking and conceiving architecture as an opportunity to envisage and design spaces, structures and relations from a critical point of view, while at the same time seeking for the newness, which is immanent to architectural practice.

The aim of this exhibition is to show a part of this production, and to offer a common ground for this rather unconventional practice of architecture. We see this exhibition as a chance to promote and expose new practices in and approaches to architectural design.

OUTSIDE: Self-initiated Projects will exhibit projects that were initiated by the architects/ authors themselves. The exhibition seeks proposals that did not have a formal brief to be addressed- not by the client as a commission, nor by the competition call. These projects are initiated by the architect and offer fresh design approaches and positions.

Projects can be placed in 3 categories:

1. Concepts for space – competition without a brief Refers to conceptual propositions and speculations about space. All scales are taken into consideration.

2. Digital research – experiments through digital media, concerning space and architecture that offer new readings and interpretations, without necessary direct implications for physical realm.

3. Small interventions – built stuff.

Expected proposals should offer unique, critical and/or utopian, research based architectural visions. The focus of the exhibition is mainly on research-based proposals, which, to some extent, succeeded in developing a critical position towards the context- physical, social, cultural, or other. – --
